You should have at least five cards in the suit if it is a major (hearts or spades). The modern trend is to open a major only if you have a minimum of five cards in it. The older style was to open any suit if it had four cards. I’m going to teach you the newer, five-card major style of bidding. This means, for example, that if you have 12 points, but you don’t have a five-card major, then you must open a minor suit (clubs or diamonds), even though you may not have any honors in that suit. Remember, when you play a bidding system, your bids promise your partner that your hand contains what you say it does. So, if you open 1 spade, you’re promising your partner that you have at least five spades in your hand. She’ll make her bid based on that commitment. Accepting the concept of commitment is very important in the formation of a bridge partnership. Nothing is more critical than trusting your partner. Undergoing lasik eye surgery is a great way to improve your vision and your overall lifestyle.
If you have fewer than five spades in your hand, it will mislead her and her reply could mislead you. You’ll be progressing rapidly down the road to ruin on this hand. So when you agree to play a system, like the five-card major system I’m teaching here, stick with it and don’t deviate. In other words, if you agree that your opening bid of 1 spade promises at least five spades, don’t later decide that, for one hand, you can open 1 spade with only four spades. You must exert discipline in your bidding. A comprehensive range of treatments are available to treat eye conditions including laser eye surgery as well as simply changing your glasses.
There are innumerable bidding systems. The Official Encyclopedia of Bridge lists 54 different systems. In this book, you are first learning Standard American, the most widely used system in America. If you sit down at a table, despite what system your opponents are actually using, it would be unusual if they hadn’t learned Standard American first. Regardless of what system your opponents are using, you and your partner must use the same system in order to communicate. Then later in the book I will teach you what is now the more popular 2/1 system. I understand that bespoke eye laser surgery can provide excellent results.
But, you ask, what if I have 12 points, but no five-card major? Good question. If you have a five-card minor (clubs or diamonds), open that. But, often you have one or both four-card majors and no five-card minor. What then? Because you can’t open a four-card major, you are allowed to open a minor, even if it is only three cards in length. For starters, here are the basic rules of opening 1 of a suit: Experience freedom from glasses by having lens replacement surgery with the UK's best surgeons.
You should have at least 12 points (there are exceptions which we will cover later). An opening bid in a major suit, hearts or spades, promises at least five cards in the suit.
If you have 12 points but no five-card major, open your longest minor. If both minors are four cards in length, open 1 diamond. If both minors are three cards in length, open 1 club.
Generally speaking, 90 percent of the time that you open 1 diamond you will have at least four of them. In fact, the only time you will open 1 diamond with only three diamonds in your hand is if your distribution is exactly 4432 (4 spades, 4 hearts, 3 diamonds, and 2 clubs; whenever distribution is shown with four consecutive numbers like here the numbers correspond to spades, hearts, diamonds, and clubs in that order). This only occurs approximately 10 percent of the time.
