The older style was to open any suit if it had four cards. I’m going to teach you the newer, five-card major style of bidding. This means, for example, that if you have 12 points, but you don’t have a five-card major, then you must open a minor suit (clubs or diamonds), even though you may not have any honors in that suit. Remember, when you play a bidding system, your bids promise your partner that your hand contains what you say it does. So, if you open 1 spade, you’re promising your partner that you have at least five spades in your hand. She’ll make her bid based on that commitment. Accepting the concept of commitment is very important in the formation of a bridge partnership. Nothing is more critical than trusting your partner. There are innumerable bidding systems. The Official Encyclopedia of Bridge lists 54 different systems. In this book, you are first learning Standard American, the most widely used system in America. If you sit down at a table, despite what system your opponents are actually using, it would be unusual if they hadn’t learned Standard American first. Regardless of what system your opponents are using, you and your partner must use the same system in order to communicate. This only occurs approximately 10 percent of the time.
